Chatbots vs. Agents
The difference between an AI that talks and one that does.
By the end of this lesson
You'll understand why agents are a different species, not a better chatbot.
A chatbot answers. An agent acts. That one word — acts — is the whole revolution, and most people haven't felt it yet.
A chatbot is an advisor on the phone: it tells you what to do, you go do it. An agent is a contractor with keys to the house: it opens the files, makes the changes, runs the thing, sees the error, fixes it, and tries again — until the job is done.
What an agent can do that a chatbot can't
- 1Read and write real files on a computer.
- 2Give the computer typed instructions ('commands') and see what happened.
- 3Loop: try → observe the result → correct itself → repeat.
- 4Use tools and connect to other systems to get real work done.
