Find any file by what's in it, not its name

DigUp searches the files on your computer by what's inside them, not by their names: describe what you're looking for in plain words, and it opens the right page, video moment or line of code.

01ARahim3/DigUp 6.0kSwift

A free app for Mac, Windows and Linux that understands the meaning of text, photos, audio and video on your computer and searches by description.

When it helps

Useful when you remember what's in a file but not its name or folder — for photos, PDFs, videos, recordings and documents. Skip it if a plain filename search is already enough.

Pros

  • Runs fully on your device, files never leave your computer
  • Understands over 100 languages and searches across them
  • Opens straight to the right page, frame or line
  • Free, no account or subscription needed

Cons

  • Old Word files, RAW photos and SVGs only work on Mac
  • First indexing of a large folder can take hours
  • Windows and Linux versions are still in beta

How to set it up — step by step

  1. 1Open an AI agent (Claude Code, Codex, etc.) in a folder on your computer.
  2. 2Send the agent the text from the block below.
  3. 3Let the agent download and install DigUp for your system without admin rights.
  4. 4Tell the agent which folder to index first, when it asks.
  5. 5Test it: press the shortcut and describe a file in your own words.
  6. 6Open the result and check it's the right page, moment or line.

Text for your agent

Copy this and send it to your agent — Claude Code, Codex, any of them:

Install DigUp from https://github.com/ARahim3/DigUp — download the right build for my system (Mac, Windows or Linux) following the README, point it at one of my folders for the first index, and show me how the meaning-based search works. No keys or accounts needed.

Runs on a regular computer — no GPU required: on Mac you need Apple Silicon (an M-chip) and macOS 14+, on Windows and Linux a regular 64-bit PC. The model is 865MB and downloads once; search runs locally after that.
