Free Word alternative you can hand to an AI agent
WordCraft is a free app for writing and formatting documents, rebuilt from scratch instead of Microsoft Word. You can now hand routine document formatting straight to an AI agent.
It's a free word processor — a program for writing and designing documents, rebuilt clean-room with no Microsoft code inside.
When it helps
Useful for routine formatting, styles, and mail merge through an agent; it's still alpha, so skip it for complex tables or macros.
Pros
- Free, no sign-up, runs on Mac, Windows, and Linux
- An agent controls the document directly through 422 commands
- Checks its own work by reading the file's structure, no screenshots needed
- Opens and saves regular .docx files
Cons
- Alpha software: about 88% of Word's toolbar is ready
- Complex tables and macros don't fully work yet
How to set it up — step by step
- 1Open github.com/storytold/wordcraft and download the installer from the Releases page.
- 2Connect it to your agent with claude mcp add wordcraft -- wordcraft-cli mcp.
- 3Send the agent the text from the block below.
- 4Check the result: open the finished document and compare it to your template.
- 5Keep regular Word on hand for important files, in case of complex tables.
Text for your agent
Copy this and send it to your agent — Claude Code, Codex, any of them:
Set up WordCraft from here: https://github.com/storytold/wordcraft — build it per the README (cargo run --release -p wordcraft) or grab an installer from Releases, connect it to Claude Code with claude mcp add wordcraft -- wordcraft-cli mcp, then ask the agent to open a sample document, apply some styles and show you the result.
An ordinary desktop app for Mac, Windows or Linux — no heavy hardware needed.
