DeepSeek V4.1 Flash: a Chinese model for code and agent tasks

DeepSeek, a Chinese AI lab, released an updated model for reasoning, coding, and agent tasks and loudly touts its benchmarks. The weights are open under MIT, but at 763 billion parameters running it yourself needs datacenter-grade hardware — so trying it means going through DeepSeek's own chat or API.

This is DeepSeek's large AI model for code, reasoning, and agent work — an update to the earlier V4.1-Flash. The weights are published openly under MIT, with instructions for running it, but 763 billion parameters call for server-grade infrastructure, not a home PC.

When it helps

Useful if you want to run your coding task through another model for free and compare the answer with what your usual agent gives. Don't expect it to replace Opus or Claude Code: in DeepSeek's own benchmark table it still trails almost everywhere, winning only one narrow agentic-coding test.

Pros

  • Compare a coding task with Opus's answer for free via DeepSeek's chat
  • Beats Opus 5 on one agentic-coding benchmark, DeepSWE
  • Weights open under MIT — you can study the code and setup instructions

Cons

  • Trails Opus 5 on almost every other benchmark in DeepSeek's own table
  • 763 billion parameters — can't run at home, needs datacenter-grade hardware
  • Loud benchmark numbers don't guarantee real-world agentic performance

How to set it up — step by step

  1. 1Open your agent (Claude Code, Codex) in your project folder.
  2. 2Send the agent the text from the block below.
  3. 3See how DeepSeek handles your coding task, then compare the result with your usual agent's answer.
  4. 4If you want to run the model yourself: weights are open under MIT, but you'll need datacenter-grade infrastructure — 763 billion parameters won't fit on a regular PC.

Text for your agent

Copy this and send it to your agent — Claude Code, Codex, any of them:

Open DeepSeek V4.1-Flash-1017's chat (https://huggingface.co/deepseek-ai/DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash-1017) and give it a real coding task, the kind I'd normally hand to an agent in Claude Code — show me the result and compare it with what Opus produces.

This is a server-only model with 763 billion parameters — you cannot run it at home, it needs data-center-level hardware. But as a flagship release it sets the bar other models get measured against.
