OpenSpec: Spec-Driven Workflow for Claude Code
A framework that forces your AI coding agent to write and agree on a plan before touching any code — fewer rewrites, more of what you actually wanted.
OpenSpec is a spec-driven development (SDD) framework for AI coding agents. It lets you explore the problem space (/opsx:explore), propose a solution by creating a directory called proposal.md, specs/, design.md, and tasks.md (/opsx:propose), apply the plan (/opsx:apply), and validate the outcome (/opsx:verify). Compatible with Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Gemini CLI, and over 33 other tools. Created by Fission AI, released in August 2025, and gained 68k Github stars within a year. This framework is intentionally made ‘fluid’ rather than ‘rigid’ so that your specs can live and breathe with your project.
Why a vibe-coder should care
A major issue with AI coding agents is that they tend to deviate from our original intentions. With OpenSpec, you can ensure that your agent plans out their approach, gets approval, and then executes — preventing unnecessary revisions once you realize halfway through that your agent didn’t quite understand your request. I would use this on all of my projects built using Claude Code.
How to install
Copy this and send it to your agent — Claude Code, Codex, any of them:
Set up OpenSpec in this project: https://github.com/Fission-AI/OpenSpec — follow the README, add Claude Code configuration, and walk me through using /opsx:propose and /opsx:apply on a simple example like adding dark mode. Ask me if you need anything from the environment.
