Apple Adds AI Assistant to Pages, Keynote, and Numbers
Apple has added an AI assistant built on its own models and OpenAI's to Pages, Keynote, and Numbers, along with support for the MCP protocol for external agents.
Apple has released a beta AI feature for Pages, Keynote, and Numbers that combines its own models with models built by OpenAI, the makers of ChatGPT. The features include things like generating presentations and animations in Keynote, writing and editing text in Pages, and running calculations and visualization suggestions in Numbers. Apple has also added support for MCP (Model Context Protocol) to these apps, which lets third-party AI agents access and modify documents.
The MCP integration is actually more interesting than the AI assistant itself, since it lets coding AI agents work with files outside the development environment. That said, it's worth noting the assistant is still in beta, available only in English, and limited to users in the US, so agents should not rely on it just yet. Still, if you are a regular user, it is a nice addition, even if not a breakthrough one.
