Claude Code Hit a Limit? Auto-Continue Doesn’t Miss a Beat

Claude Code will now automatically continue when your usage limit expires and the turn continues. Learn more about how it works and how to enable / disable it.

Before v2.1.234, reaching your usage limit in the middle of a task meant having to restart and explain the whole thing again to Claude. Now, Claude Code will automatically pause and continue when your usage limit expires. No manual re-submission, no digging up the copy-paste history — just walk away and let Claude get it done! My name is Evgeny and this feature helped me kick off a big refactor before heading to dinner to see the diff once I returned.

What is a Claude Code usage limit?

For paid accounts (Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise), Claude Code counts against a seat usage limit. There are two clocks you need to keep in mind when counting your usage limit: a rolling 5 hour session usage limit, and a weekly usage limit. Once you’ve reached your session usage limit, you’ll receive a ‘You’ve hit your session limit’ card, which will trigger auto-continuation. A separate usage limit card handles the weekly usage limit, which does not currently have auto-continuation capabilities. Each usage limit card displays the time the clock resets.

How does Claude Code auto-continue work?

Once you’ve triggered a session usage limit, you will see the ‘You’ve hit your session limit’ card, along with the time your limit will be reset. After the session limit is reset, Claude Code will automatically resume your paused turn from where it left off. This means you don’t have to worry about re-submitting your request, or even being at your computer. Your session will remain active in the background, and Claude will continue right where he left off. Starting with v2.1.237, this was enabled by default. If you’re running an earlier version, you can opt into this feature by checking the ‘Auto-continue when limits reset’ box in Claude Code Desktop and selecting ‘Wait and retry’ from the /rate-limit-options menu in the CLI.

!Weekly limits do not auto-continue

Auto-continue only works with the session (five-hour) limit. The weekly limit card does not offer the option — when you hit it you need to wait until the weekly window resets, or run /usage-credits to add paid credits.

How to turn auto-continue on or off

Control auto-continue in three places

  1. 1In /config: find 'Continue automatically at usage limit' and toggle it. The setting persists across sessions.
  2. 2In settings.json: add {"autoContinueAtUsageLimit": false} to ~/.claude/settings.json to turn it off globally, or true to keep it on explicitly.
  3. 3Per session (v2.1.234 – v2.1.236): when the limit card appears, check or uncheck 'Auto-continue when limits reset' — the card shows 'Auto-resuming at HH:MM' when it is armed.
  4. 4Organisations on managed settings: admins can lock the behaviour with the autoContinueAtUsageLimit managed-settings key.
Turn auto-continue off in settings
{ "autoContinueAtUsageLimit": false }

Drop this into ~/.claude/settings.json (or the project-level .claude/settings.json) to disable auto-continue everywhere for that scope. Remove the key or set it to true to re-enable it.

✓The use case that actually matters

Long tasks — refactoring a big module, running a workflow across dozens of files, researching a complex topic — can easily exceed a session window. With auto-continue on, those tasks just finish, possibly after a pause you never notice. The pattern: start the work, enable auto-continue if needed, walk away. Come back to a result.

Does auto-continue work on Desktop and CLI?

Starting with v2.1.237, yes. For Claude Code Desktop, the Code tab displays a checkbox and the ‘Auto-resuming at’ time once the limit card is armed. For the CLI, no additional steps are required — Claude Code will automatically handle the wait. You can also use Remote Control sessions or connect to claude.ai/code sessions, which will trigger the usage limit message.

Remember, your session will remain active until your usage limit resets, so make sure to keep Claude Code running in the background (or minimize instead of closing) so your task doesn’t stop. Or if you’re using Claude Code Desktop, look for the ‘Move to background’ option, which will keep your session active even if you close the window.
