Pastor nearly died after following ChatGPT’s medical advice. Lawsuit filed against OpenAI
ChatGPT advised a minister to stay home despite pulmonary embolism, and now he’s suing OpenAI for medical misconduct.
Scott Winters, a pastor, claims that ChatGPT gave him incorrect medical information about pulmonary embolisms, telling him that their symptoms are “not dangerous” and that “God did not create your body to fail endlessly.” Based on this advice, he stayed home instead of going to the hospital, despite pleas from members of his congregation for him to seek medical assistance. Now he’s suffering serious complications that will take years to recover from.
Winters is suing OpenAI for violating medical licensing laws by providing medical advice through its ChatGPT platform. He’s also asking the court to suspend operations of the ChatGPT Health service until an independent third party can conduct a safety review. If successful, it would establish a legal precedent for regulating AI medical advice, which has never been done before.
