China Cracks Down On Foreign Use Of AI Technology
US has always restricted chip exports. Now China is doing the same thing, but for AI models. This leaves Europe screwed because it relies heavily on foreign suppliers (80% of digital goods), doesn’t have any domestic solution, and the last line of defense against a US lab monopoly (cheap Chinese open source) might disappear before they build their first AI gigafactory.
China’s Ministry of Commerce plans to restrict foreign access to advanced AI models such as DeepSeek R1, Alibaba Qwen, ByteDance Doubao. Some frontier models may remain strictly internal.
The Ministry of Commerce (MoC) is drafting a set of measures to control the export of advanced artificial intelligence (AI) technology, which include three levels of restriction: registration-based access to basic models, security assessment for intermediate models, and complete ban on exporting frontier models. Companies like Alibaba, ByteDance, Z.ai may be banned.
