Canadian AI firm Cohere is raising a round that values it at $20.5 billion, nearly three times last year's figure. The Canadian government and Nvidia are among the backers.

Canadian AI company Cohere is raising new funding at a $20.5 billion valuation. That is almost triple what it was a year ago. The full round is expected to reach as much as $5 billion, and the first tranche has already closed. The investors include the Canadian government and chipmaker Nvidia. The German retail group Schwarz Group had earlier put in $600 million.

It is worth noting who is actually behind this. A government and a chipmaker, not a wave of new subscribers. Cohere's models are not among the ones leading real-world development through Claude Code, Anthropic's terminal tool. That spot still belongs to Anthropic's Opus and Fable. The big bet from Canada and Nvidia points to confidence in Cohere's infrastructure business. It does not signal a shift in which model developers actually use today.
