Google DeepMind Loses Its CEO and Chief Scientist on the Same Day
Demis Hassabis & Jeff Dean are leaving their core positions at Google DeepMind at the same time. Hassabis moves to Chief Scientist of Alphabet, while Dean (who’s been at Google for 27 years) starts a science automation company.
The CEO and chief scientist of Google DeepMind have stepped down. Demis Hassabis becomes Chief Scientist of Alphabet and focuses on AGI & Isomorphic Labs. He also starts a science automation company called Discovery Loop (financed by Khosla, Kleiner Perkins, Alphabet). Jeff Dean (at Google since 27 years) starts a science automation company called Discovery Loop (financed by Khosla, Kleiner Perkins, Alphabet). Koray Kavukcuoglu (former CTO of DeepMind) becomes the new CEO.
When key figures of an organization quit together, it usually means that they think that the initial building phase is finished. They both mention that AGI is “around the corner” and want to take advantage of this by working outside of the corporate world. Google scales up DeepMind.
