EU Orders Google to Open Android to ChatGPT, Claude, and Rival AI Assistants
The European Commission has ordered Google to open Android to competing AI assistants by July 27. Four levels of access, search data sharing, and a $30B+ fine for non-compliance.
The European Commission has ordered Google to open Android to competing AI assistants — ChatGPT, Claude, and others — by July 27. Four levels of access: custom voice commands, screen reading, autonomous in-app actions, and the same hardware resources available to Gemini. Google must also share search data — queries, clicks, and impressions — with competitors. The fine for non-compliance: up to 10% of Alphabet's annual revenue, which exceeds $30B.
The AI assistant market has been shaped by who's baked into the system by default. Mandated open access levels the playing field across 2 billion devices at once — shifting the balance of power in the assistant race more decisively than any benchmark ever could.
