Google pledges $40 million to double US rate of scientific discovery
Google’s $40M donation of AI tokens + Cloud credits to all 17 US Dept of Energy National Labs is part of the White House’s Genesis Mission to double America’s rate of scientific progress in ten years.
Google has pledged $40M of AI tokens and Cloud credits to all 17 US Dept of Energy National Labs. This is part of the White House’s Genesis Mission, which was announced in November 2025 with the goal of doubling America’s rate of scientific progress over the next decade.
Scientists will be able to use AlphaFold 3 to predict protein structures, AlphaEvolve (which uses Gemini as its code & discover agent), AlphaGenome to analyze DNA sequences, and WeatherNext weather prediction models. PNNL has seen a 90-minute calibration process reduced to 13 minutes and a reduction from ~50 manual adjustments to only 2 when focusing microscope images.
This is the first time that an AI tool has been made available to all parts of the Federal science complex simultaneously. If these same types of tools can be used to simulate plasma behavior in fusion reactors or optimize novel materials, we may actually see a doubling of our rate of fundamental science discoveries.
