Hassabis wants an international body that can pull the emergency brake on artificial intelligence

Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google DeepMind, suggested creating a US agency like FINRA to regulate and, if necessary, throttle progress on cutting-edge AI models (the strongest AI algorithms) to prevent them from becoming unsafe. It wouldn’t apply to startups or research efforts.

Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google DeepMind, has outlined his vision for an international regulatory framework for artificial intelligence (AI). He suggests establishing a US agency similar to FINRA that can regulate and even limit progress on cutting-edge AI models (strongest AI algorithms) to keep them safe. This does not include startups or research initiatives.

It’s the first time we hear such a proposal from someone within the industry. And coming from the head of the world’s biggest AI lab, when “nobody in the world knows what comes next,” this takes the discussion about AI regulation out of the intellectual realm and puts it firmly in the political one.
