Ai2 Cuts the Cost of Extreme-Weather Simulation by 300x
Ai2 has released HiRO-ACEv2, an extreme-weather simulation system with 3-km resolution that costs roughly 300 times less to run than the benchmark model X-SHiELD.
Ai2 (the Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence, a research lab) has released HiRO-ACEv2, a system that simulates extreme weather. It covers heavy rain, wind, and pressure swings at 3-kilometer resolution across the whole planet. The authors say that producing global data at this resolution costs roughly 300 times less than running X-SHiELD, the benchmark weather model at the same resolution. The statistics for rare events, the kind that show up only once per million data points, match the benchmark model to within 3%. The model weights and a demo for comparing against the benchmark are both open on Hugging Face, a platform for publishing AI models.
For climate science, a price difference like this changes almost everything. The same budget now covers hundreds of times more scenarios. Or it buys a resolution that used to require a supercomputer. The open weights on Hugging Face also matter for a simpler reason. Meteorologists and insurance analysts can test the model on their own region for free, instead of waiting on a compute grant.
