Kimi K2.7 Code Joins GitHub Copilot as Its First Open-Weight Model
GitHub Copilot has added its first open-weight model to the model picker — Kimi K2.7 Code from Moonshot AI. Available in VS Code, JetBrains, Xcode, and four other environments for Pro, Pro+, and Max plans.
GitHub Copilot has announced the availability of Kimi K2.7 Code — an open-weight model from Chinese startup Moonshot AI — in its official model picker. This is the first open-weight model in Copilot: until now, the tool ran exclusively on closed models from OpenAI and Anthropic. The model is available in VS Code (version 1.127.0+), Visual Studio, JetBrains, Xcode, Eclipse, and GitHub Mobile.
Access is immediately available on Copilot Pro, Pro+, and Max plans; rollout to Business and Enterprise plans is scheduled for the coming weeks, pending manual enablement by an administrator. GitHub hosts the model on Microsoft Azure infrastructure, with pay-as-you-go pricing at provider rates.
Opening Copilot to third-party models shifts the competitive landscape: developer platforms are moving away from single-brand offerings and becoming marketplaces where providers compete on price and quality. For open-weight models, this is a critical distribution channel — access to tens of millions of developers who use Copilot every day.
