Microsoft’s CO2 emissions increased by 25% YoY in FY 2025 because of AI datacenters, even though they promised to be carbon negative by 2030. In their report, they even admit that “Sustainable solutions are not yet meeting the growing demand.”

The quest for AI compute is creating huge industrial emissions. This company even made some public commitments towards sustainability. For now, AI and sustainability seem to be on different tracks.
