Microsoft Launches $2.5B Frontier Company for Enterprise AI Deployment
Microsoft is investing $2.5 billion in Microsoft Frontier Company — a 6,000-person unit dedicated to deploying AI solutions at large enterprises.
Microsoft is launching Microsoft Frontier Company, a standalone unit with a $2.5 billion budget and a staff of 6,000 engineers and industry specialists. The unit's mission is to help large enterprises deploy AI solutions built on existing Microsoft products — Azure, Copilot, and other company services. Judson Althoff, Microsoft's commercial CEO, will lead the new organization.
Early partners include London Stock Exchange Group, Unilever, Land O'Lakes, and Accenture. Microsoft is betting on its existing customer base: thousands of Fortune 500 companies already run Microsoft 365 and Azure, and the company is now taking on the job of moving them onto AI with its own specialists.
A separate race is heating up in the enterprise AI deployment market: Amazon has committed $1 billion to a similar initiative, while OpenAI and Anthropic are forming joint ventures with private equity funds. The big tech companies are no longer content to sell APIs and cloud capacity — they're taking on hands-on implementation themselves, becoming a new kind of consulting giant.
