The French startup has closed its Series D at €3B with a €21B valuation. Investors include Samsung, BlackRock, and Nvidia, as Mistral doubles down on sovereign AI for European enterprises.
Mistral AI has closed a €3B Series D — the largest funding round in the history of European tech. The company's valuation doubled to €21B in a year. The round was led by Samsung Electronics alongside the Scaleup Europe Fund and PSG Equity. Co-investors include BlackRock, Nvidia, and ASML.
Sovereign AI as Strategy
Mistral positions itself as a sovereign AI provider — open models under customer control, with no dependency on American clouds. Clients include Airbus, ASML, and HSBC. The company operates in 20 countries and serves more than 125 enterprise customers. Revenue has grown 20x since the start of 2026.
Where Mistral Stands in the Model Race
Technically, Mistral Medium 3.5 trails open-source Chinese models like Qwen and Kimi. The company isn't competing with closed American systems like GPT or Claude, instead targeting enterprise customers for whom control and data localization matter more than benchmark rankings.
