Seattle Times and Newsday have sued OpenAI and Microsoft, claiming they violated their paywalls and scraped content to train AI models without permission or compensation. They argue that this practice has cost them traffic and advertising revenues, and is replacing human journalists with AI-generated summaries. Their lawyers dubbed generative AI “a snake eating its own tail.”

It’s the third round of high-profile lawsuits against AI. The New York Times kicked off the battle in 2023, followed by CNN suing Perplexity in 2025. Now it’s the turn of local papers to fight back. Some, like AP and Vox, signed licensing agreements. Others took a different approach and decided to go to court. The results of these trials will shape how AI can use news content.
