Nvidia Employee Arrested in Taiwan for Smuggling AI Servers to China
An Nvidia employee has been detained in Taiwan on charges of illegally exporting Super Micro servers with AI chips to China. This is the third wave of arrests in the case — investigators searched Nvidia's Taipei office during the proceedings.
An Nvidia employee has been detained in Taiwan on suspicion of smuggling Super Micro servers equipped with Nvidia chips to China in violation of U.S. export laws. The suspect, surnamed Chan, was arrested on July 24 by prosecutors in Keelung District on charges of document forgery and breach of trust. Nvidia's Taipei office was searched as part of the investigation.
This is the third wave of arrests in the same case: five others were detained in May and June, including two Super Micro employees. Nvidia said it works primarily with vetted partners who comply with U.S. export regulations, but declined to confirm the suspect's employment.
Export controls on AI chips have moved beyond paperwork — they've become a criminal matter inside the manufacturers themselves. The more China needs compute for AI, the more sophisticated the workarounds become, and the harder U.S. allies crack down on violations.
