Artificial Intelligence Helps Scientists Advance Their Careers, and Limits the Pool of Competitors
AI-aided researchers produce 3x more publications, get cited 5x as much, and get promoted one to two years earlier than their peers. But their papers are also more concentrated and specialized.
AI-aided researchers produce 3x more publications, get cited 5x as much, and get promoted one to two years earlier than their peers. A study of 41.3 million papers (1980–2025) showed that “research productivity” has exploded (University of Chicago).
The papers written by researchers working with AI are more concentrated and specialized. They tend to focus on commonly used techniques and datasets and avoid exploring new knowledge domains. In other words, the benefits of increased productivity for individuals come at the cost of diversity for society at large.
