Sutskever Steps Into the Light: SSI and Nvidia Team Up

Ilya Sutskever's SSI is breaking its silence: Nvidia is investing billions and providing access to Vera Rubin GPUs. The company is valued at $32B — without a single public product.

Safe Superintelligence (SSI) — the startup founded by Ilya Sutskever after his departure from OpenAI in 2023 — has broken its silence for the first time. The company announced a long-term strategic partnership with Nvidia: the chipmaker is investing several billion dollars and giving SSI access to the Vera Rubin platform — Nvidia's most powerful GPUs for AI training. According to Sutskever, the company's compute capacity will grow by an order of magnitude.

What SSI Is and Why It Stayed Quiet for Two Years

SSI deliberately chose not to build commercial products since its founding — Sutskever's explanation was simple: commerce is a distraction from the mission. Over two years the company raised $7B from Andreessen Horowitz, Alphabet, and Sequoia Capital and reached a $32B valuation. Nvidia was already an SSI investor before today's announcement.

What the Partnership Delivers

Access to Vera Rubin is not merely extra servers — it's entry into the pool of accelerators previously dominated by OpenAI and Google DeepMind. Sutskever commented: 'We have research that deserves to be scaled — and Nvidia's big computer will let us do that.' SSI will also collaborate with Nvidia on the development of future platforms.

SSI's emergence from stealth turns the AI lab map into a three-pole contest: OpenAI and Anthropic are racing for products and revenue, while SSI is chasing foundational superintelligence safety. With compute access now on par with its competitors, Sutskever's lab becomes a real contender in the AI research race.
