One of the most frustrating things about writing an AI agent to play a game is when you have to make art. You can spend all day writing game rules with your AI agent, but it can’t magically create art for you. Suddenly you have a bunch of grey boxes and coloured rectangles on your screen.

Pixel-boy (a pixel artist at Sparklin Labs, the company behind the Superpowers HTML5 game maker) has published a series of high quality game assets under the CC0 license. This means you can download these assets and use them however you want, even commercially, without having to attribute anyone. There are 11 different packs, each covering a different type of game, all available in a single repository. This is an awesome resource if you’re looking to give your vibe coded game a more finished feel.

These assets are compatible with any game engine. Although they were made by Pixel-boy (a pixel artist at Sparklin Labs), they are generic enough that you can use them in any game. Each pack is stored in its own directory within the repository, with preview images for you to see what the artwork looks like before downloading. High quality pixel art with a professional finish that can’t be matched by grey boxes.

What's inside the 11 packs

  1. 13d-character — animated 3D-style character sprites for platformers and RPGs
  2. 23d-vehicles — car and vehicle sprites in isometric 3D style
  3. 33d-warriors — warrior characters for fantasy and battle games
  4. 4backgrounds — tileable and static background scenes
  5. 5medieval-fantasy — tiles, characters, and props for fantasy settings
  6. 6ninja-adventure — two-part ninja-themed platformer asset set
  7. 7prehistoric-platformer — cave and prehistoric themed platformer sprites
  8. 8rpg-battle-system — UI and characters for turn-based RPG battles
  9. 9space-shooter — ships, bullets, and explosions for side-scrolling space games
  10. 10top-down-shooter — characters and environment for top-down shooters
  11. 11western-fps-2d — 2D first-person western shooter sprites

How to use these assets in your project

You can clone this repository using git. Once you’ve done that you can specify which directory your AI agent should look in to load the sprites. Everything is stored as a PNG image so you won’t have any problems using them in any game engine. Alternatively you can download the entire pack as a zip file from itch.io.

Download all packs
git clone https://github.com/sparklinlabs/superpowers-asset-packs.git

Once you’ve cloned the repository you can access the files using their file paths. If you’re making a space shooting game then you could ask your AI agent to load the sprites from the ‘superpowers-asset-packs/space-shooter/’ directory. You would then ask it to link up the spaceship sprite, the bullet sprite, and the explosion frames to your game objects. Your AI agent would take care of the loading, setting up animations, and defining collision boxes. All you need to do is provide it with some artwork instead of describing the shapes.

ℹAlso on itch.io

The full packs are available as a downloadable zip at sparklinlabs.itch.io/superpowers — useful if you'd rather not clone the whole repo just to get one genre's assets.

What to tell your agent

✦Prompts that work

"I cloned sparklinlabs/superpowers-asset-packs. Use the space-shooter folder — load the player ship sprite, the bullet sprite, and the explosion animation frames. Set up the explosion as a one-shot animation when the ship gets hit." "Use the medieval-fantasy assets from superpowers-asset-packs to build the main character and enemy sprites for my top-down RPG. Wire up walking animations for four directions."

✓What you get

Eleven complete game art packs under CC0 — free, no strings attached. Characters, backgrounds, vehicles, UI elements covering genres from space shooters to medieval RPGs. One git clone and your agent has real art to work with instead of placeholder boxes. No attribution needed, works in commercial projects.
