Waymo to offer robotaxis in Munich from late 2027
Waymo enters Munich, will start offering robotaxis by the end of 2027. In Germany, Waymo competes with Wayve, Baidu, Mobileye, and Volkswagen.
Waymo unveiled its plans to deploy a robotaxi fleet in Munich. Commercial operations will begin by the end of 2027, following the usual process. The news was published on August 25, 2026.
Launch Phases
Waymo follows its usual approach: manual mapping of streets, followed by autonomous testing with a safety driver, a small deployment for internal staff and media, and finally, full commercialization once it receives clearance from the German KBA (Federal Motor Transport Authority) and local governments. They didn’t specify which areas or how many cars.
Germany and the European Context
Germany was the first country in the EU to introduce legislation for Level 4 self-driving cars, but that was five years ago. Waymo isn’t even the first European city where they operate — they are already present in 11 cities and will begin serving London in 2026.
Competitors in the German Market
In Germany, Waymo has strong competition from Wayve, Baidu, Mobileye, and Volkswagen, who are also testing their autonomous vehicles. The battle for the European robotaxi market has only begun, and Germany is quickly turning into a major battleground thanks to its existing regulations.
