Claude Code: the terminal AI coding agent, reviewed

Anthropic maintains the public repository for Claude Code, the agent that reads a whole project, edits files, and runs git commands from plain English requests. This is the tool behind most of what gets published on this channel, so it is worth looking at what the repository itself actually contains.

Claude Code is Anthropic's terminal AI agent for coding: it understands your project, edits files, and commits to git.

When it helps

Use it when you want to change code via plain language in a terminal and automate git; skip it without an Anthropic subscription or internet.

Pros

  • Understands the whole project and explains unfamiliar code
  • Edits files and commits to git on its own
  • Runs from one terminal command, no GPU required
  • Opus 5 covers most tasks; switch to Fable 5.1 for harder ones

Cons

  • Cloud-only — needs an internet connection to work
  • Requires an Anthropic subscription to access the models

How to set it up — step by step

  1. 1Open github.com/anthropics/claude-code and read the install section (Mac/Linux script or Homebrew)
  2. 2Open a terminal in your project folder
  3. 3Send your agent the text from the block below
  4. 4Check what changes Claude Code suggests for the first file in your project
  5. 5If it asks for a key or subscription, confirm Anthropic access — otherwise it won't run

Text for your agent

Copy this and send it to your agent — Claude Code, Codex, any of them:

Install Claude Code using the official instructions from https://github.com/anthropics/claude-code (the Mac/Linux install script or Homebrew), open a terminal in my project folder, run `claude`, and show me what it suggests doing with the first file; ask me if you need a key or a subscription.

Runs on a regular laptop, no graphics card needed, just a terminal. But the agent is cloud-based: it needs an Anthropic subscription and an internet connection to work.
