A Ready AI Shop Assistant and Store Manager You Can Try Tonight

Anthropic released a reference pair of AI agents for online stores — one for shoppers, one for staff. Deploy the demo and see how it works before building your own store bot.

One AI helper searches products and fills a shopper's cart, taking it up to checkout — the store's own system completes the purchase and payment, not the agent. The other helps staff update product listings and prices.

When it helps

Useful if you're planning an AI assistant for a store, travel site, phone carrier, or ticket seller and want a working example to study. Skip it if you already have a working bot or have no product catalog to connect.

Pros

  • Four ready demos: retail, travel, telecom, and entertainment
  • Important: price and listing changes apply only after a human approves them
  • Runs on an ordinary laptop, no graphics card needed

Cons

  • Just a reference build — you'll need to adapt it to your own catalog
  • Needs a Claude API key, or the demo won't start

How to set it up — step by step

  1. 1Open your AI agent (Claude Code or Codex) in a project folder.
  2. 2Send the agent the text from the block below — it will clone the repo and launch the retail demo.
  3. 3Give it your ANTHROPIC_API_KEY if the agent asks for one.
  4. 4Check the storefront in your browser at localhost:3000.
  5. 5Try searching for a product, adding it to the cart, and see how it leads to checkout.

Text for your agent

Copy this and send it to your agent — Claude Code, Codex, any of them:

Deploy the demo from https://github.com/anthropics/commerce-agents — follow the README, run the retail vertical with `python scripts/run_demo.py retail`, and ask me if you need an ANTHROPIC_API_KEY.

Runs on a regular laptop — you'll need Python 3.11+ and Node 22; no GPU required. A Claude API key is needed to use it.
