Everything: free open-source alternatives to Excel, Photoshop, AutoCAD
An open monorepo bundling dozens of ready-made apps — spreadsheets, a word processor, video editing, CAD, and more — that you can run yourself instead of paid software.
A collection of free, open-source apps that replace everyday paid software, from office tools to design and engineering programs.
When it helps
Useful if you want a free replacement for a specific app (like Photoshop or AutoCAD) and don't mind running it from the command line. Not for you if you want a one-click installer — these apps are still in development.
Pros
- Many apps have a public demo you can try in the browser first
- Fully open source — free, no cloud lock-in
- Wide range of categories — office, design, CAD, games
Cons
- Command-line only — no beginner-friendly point-and-click install
- Not every app has a demo, and quality varies a lot
- Still under active development, not a polished product yet
How to set it up — step by step
- 1Open an AI agent (Claude Code, Codex) in your project folder.
- 2Send the agent the text from the block below — it will clone the repo and run the app.
- 3Wait while the agent runs npm install && npm run dev and reports back.
- 4Check in your browser that the app actually opened and works.
- 5Want a different app? Repeat and point the agent at another folder, e.g. src/photo-studio.
Text for your agent
Copy this and send it to your agent — Claude Code, Codex, any of them:
Deploy one app from https://github.com/HeyPuter/everything — clone the repo, go into the folder of the app you want (e.g. `src/pdf`) and run `npm install && npm run dev`, as the README says. Show me what opens in the browser.
Runs on a regular laptop — just Node.js 22.12 or newer, each app opens locally in a browser, no GPU needed.
