Transformers: run or train an open AI model yourself, for free
A free open-source library that lets your AI agent download and run any of over a million open AI models on your own machine or a cloud server — no subscription required.
Transformers is a shared standard for describing open AI models for text, images, and audio. Your coding agent can use it to download and run almost any of them with one command.
When it helps
Useful if you want to run, train, or fine-tune an open model yourself, or just try AI without a subscription. Skip it if chatting with a ready-made assistant like Claude is enough — the agent there already handles everything for you.
Pros
- Free access to over 1 million ready-made models.
- Works with most popular training and inference frameworks.
- Open-source under Apache 2.0 — use and modify freely, even commercially.
- Small models run on an ordinary laptop, no GPU needed.
Cons
- Open models still lag behind Opus and Fable on hard tasks.
- Larger models need a GPU with 16+ GB or a cloud server.
How to set it up — step by step
- 1Open your coding agent (Claude Code, Codex) inside the folder where you want to try this.
- 2Send the agent the text from the block below — it will install transformers and run the example.
- 3Check that Python 3.11+ and PyTorch 2.6+ are installed — the agent will flag it if not.
- 4Read the model's generated answer and the agent's explanation of what happened.
- 5If you like it, ask the agent to pick a bigger or task-specific model, based on your GPU memory.
Text for your agent
Copy this and send it to your agent — Claude Code, Codex, any of them:
Install the transformers library from Hugging Face (https://github.com/huggingface/transformers) and show me a small example: load a small open text model through it, generate a short answer to a simple question, and explain what is happening.
The library itself is light — it installs like any Python package, you just need Python 3.11+ and PyTorch, no GPU required for that step. The weight of the specific model you load through it is a separate question: small open models run fine on a regular laptop, larger ones need a GPU with 16+ GB or a cloud server.
