Rules that help Claude Code guess less and ask more
This is a ready-made rules file for Claude Code — once added, the agent more often states its assumptions, writes less bloated code, and touches fewer things you didn't ask about.
A file with four principles for Claude Code, based on Andrej Karpathy's notes about common AI coding mistakes.
When it helps
Useful if you work with Claude Code on real code and want fewer surprise changes; skip it for trivial fixes like typos.
Pros
- Pushes the model to state its assumptions out loud
- Demands minimal code without extra abstractions
- Limits edits to only what you actually asked for
- The same logic works in Cursor too
Cons
- It's just a text file — the agent can ignore it
- No guarantee: it reduces mistakes but doesn't remove them entirely
How to set it up — step by step
- 1Open Claude Code in your project folder.
- 2Run /plugin marketplace add forrestchang/andrej-karpathy-skills.
- 3Then run /plugin install andrej-karpathy-skills@karpathy-skills.
- 4Or instead download the file: curl -o CLAUDE.md https://raw.githubusercontent.com/forrestchang/andrej-karpathy-skills/main/CLAUDE.md.
- 5Ask the agent to make a real edit and check whether it explains assumptions before writing code.
- 6For a trivial fix like a typo, you can skip the rules — the author says not every change needs full rigor.
