Make Your ChatGPT Plugin Feel Like a Native Feature
OpenAI released an official SDK that extends MCP for ChatGPT: a plugin gets its own entry in the sidebar, a file handler, an @-mention, and forms with picture choices. You still have to write the code yourself, it is a library, not a ready application.
OpenAI announced a series of enhancements to the MCP protocol which allow developers to integrate their services into the ChatGPT UI directly (not just provide textual responses). These extensions include sidebar integration, custom file handlers, @mentions, and UI forms with images. This is an official OpenAI project built on top of the MCP protocol and MCP app SDK, but it does not replace them. There’s an SDK for both TypeScript and Python which can be installed as a dependency to any existing MCP server. A demo plugin for a parts catalog is provided, showcasing all 4 types of extensions.
Why a vibe-coder should care
I believe this will save you some time if you’re developing a ChatGPT plugin using the MCP protocol because all the low level protocol implementation for each extension is done for you and you just have to hook up what you need. This is NOT an app you can install and use out of the box, but rather a library you can use in your own projects and test while developing. This may be helpful if you’re creating a product that works within the ChatGPT ecosystem, but not so much if you’re looking for a standalone tool to use locally.
How to install
Copy this and send it to your agent — Claude Code, Codex, any of them:
Set up a simple MCP server for me with the SDK from this repository: https://github.com/openai/mcp-extensions — add one sidebar entry in ChatGPT for my project, and show me how it looks, following the example from the README.
