Ready-made pixel art effects for your game, no drawing needed
pixelfx is a free library of ready pixel art effects for games, plus an agent skill that draws new ones from your description. Skip hours of drawing fire, explosions or magic yourself — pick a ready effect or ask your agent to make one in minutes.
It's an open-source library of 244 pixel art effects for games, split into 21 categories. Each effect is a tiny piece of code with no dependencies.
When it helps
Useful if you're building a 2D pixel-art game with a coding agent and need effects like fire, magic, hits, weather or UI. Skip it if your game isn't 2D pixel art.
Pros
- Free and MIT-licensed — usable in commercial games too
- No GPU or server needed — plain JavaScript running in the browser
- 244 ready effects across 21 categories, drop-in and tweakable
- The agent skill draws a new effect to order instead of guessing
Cons
- Works only for 2D pixel-art games, not 3D or other styles
- You still need to wire the finished effect into your game's code
How to set it up — step by step
- 1Open github.com/patch-gg/pixelfx and browse the gallery at patch-gg.github.io/pixelfx to see all 244 effects
- 2In Claude Code, run /plugin marketplace add patch-gg/pixelfx, then /plugin install pixelfx@pixelfx
- 3Send your agent the text from the block below — ask it to show the effect catalog and draw one for your game
- 4Check the new effect's preview and refine your description if the result misses the mark
- 5Drop the effect into your game code, or export a sprite sheet for your engine
Text for your agent
Copy this and send it to your agent — Claude Code, Codex, any of them:
Install the pixelfx skill from https://github.com/patch-gg/pixelfx into Claude Code following the README, show me the catalog of existing effects, and use the skill to draw a new pixel-art effect for [describe what you need for your game].
Light — it's plain JavaScript with no external dependencies, runs in the browser on any laptop, no GPU needed. The skill for making new effects runs right inside Claude Code; it needs no separate server or GPU either.
