dd: Linux containers on macOS without a virtual machine
A JIT compiled, userspace syscall translated container runtime for Linux containers on Apple Silicon and Intel Macs without a hypervisor.
dd is a container runtime for macOS that removes the virtual machine. Rather than running a complete Linux VM like Docker Desktop, it utilizes a JIT compiler to translate container code and performs Linux syscalls in userspace. Supports both ARM64 and x86-64 containers, provides a Docker Engine compatible API allowing you to use regular docker commands, includes a GTK4 desktop application and CLI. Developed by one person (Richard Hutta) with 35 releases and an MIT License.
Why a vibe-coder should care
If you’re a Mac developer that works with containers, you’re probably familiar with the bloat caused by having to run a full Linux VM to build and run your Docker images. That’s where dd comes in!
