Have your AI agent draft CAD drawings in a free, open-source app

CADCraft is a free, open-source 2D/3D drafting program that your coding agent can drive through text commands instead of a chat window.

It's a program for drafting plans, parts and drawings (2D/3D CAD) with open-source code, built like AutoCAD but free and controllable by an AI agent.

When it helps

Useful when you need a precise drawing — a room floor plan or a dimensioned part — without buying AutoCAD; it won't fully replace AutoCAD yet since it's still in early development.

Pros

  • Completely free, open-source code (MIT or Apache-2.0)
  • Runs on an ordinary laptop, no strong graphics card needed
  • Reads text commands, so your own agent can draft for you
  • Opens and saves DXF/DWG files, same as AutoCAD

Cons

  • Not yet at AutoCAD's feature level — still early development
  • Reads DWG through reverse-engineered code, not Autodesk's own — some old files may fail

How to set it up — step by step

  1. 1Install Rust with the one-line installer, or download a ready binary from the Releases page.
  2. 2Build CADCraft from https://github.com/storytold/cadcraft, or grab the binary from Releases instead.
  3. 3Start CADCraft's MCP server so your agent can control the app through text commands.
  4. 4Send the agent the text from the block below.
  5. 5Check the result: open the drawing it created (a room plan or a dimensioned part) and view the image.

Text for your agent

Copy this and send it to your agent — Claude Code, Codex, any of them:

Build CADCraft from https://github.com/storytold/cadcraft (or grab a ready binary from Releases), start its MCP server, and ask my agent to draft a simple drawing from my text description — a room plan or a dimensioned part — then show me what it made.

A regular laptop — no GPU needed, just Rust (a one-command install) or a ready binary from the releases.
