A free, open-source alternative to PowerPoint for your slides

DeckCraft is a free, open-source presentation program — no PowerPoint subscription needed, and it opens and saves real .pptx files.

01storytold/deckcraft 587Rust

An open-source, free presentation program that replaces PowerPoint, built from scratch in Rust (a programming language).

When it helps

Useful if you want to make slides without a PowerPoint subscription; skip it for serious work for now — the project is only days old and still an early alpha.

Pros

  • Free and open source, no subscription needed
  • Opens and saves real PowerPoint .pptx files
  • Works with mouse and menus, like PowerPoint
  • An AI agent can build slides via a separate command channel (MCP)

Cons

  • Very new project, expect bugs and instability
  • Covers only about 80% of PowerPoint's features so far
  • Still a rough draft, not even a first alpha yet

How to set it up — step by step

  1. 1Open your AI agent (Claude Code, Codex) in your project folder.
  2. 2Send the agent the text from the block below.
  3. 3Check the demo presentation images the agent generates in the out folder.
  4. 4If you like it, download the installer for your system from the GitHub Releases page.
  5. 5Open the built-in sample presentation and try working with the mouse, like in regular PowerPoint.

Text for your agent

Copy this and send it to your agent — Claude Code, Codex, any of them:

Clone the repository at https://github.com/storytold/deckcraft, build it with cargo run --release -p deckcraft-cli -- render --sample --all --scale 1 out/ as described in the README, keep in mind the project is in a very early pre-alpha status and may break, and show me the resulting images of the rendered sample deck from the out folder.

No special hardware is needed, it runs on any ordinary laptop without a graphics card. Signed installers exist for Windows, macOS, Linux, and FreeBSD, plus AppImage, Flatpak, deb, and rpm builds, so you can install it directly from the Releases section on GitHub.
