Teach your AI coding agent Uncle Bob's discipline
ub-mode is a skill that makes your AI coding agent work the way Uncle Bob demands: get it working first, then clean up the mess. Rules are checked by separate tools, not just told to the agent.
It's a rule set (a 'skill') for an AI coding agent, loaded into Claude Code, Cursor, or Grok.
When it helps
Useful if you hand the agent many tasks in a row and don't want code breaking after small changes; skip it if your project can't follow Uncle Bob's strict rules.
Pros
- Enforces rules with external tools, not just instructions to the agent
- Caps code complexity from growing (Crapper measures a confusion score)
- Finds duplicate code and stress-tests it with mutations (Mutator)
- Nearly 1800 GitHub stars within the first two days
Cons
- Rules are strict and set by one author — not every team fits
- Requires maintaining several extra tools (Crapper, Dryer, Mutator)
How to set it up — step by step
- 1Open https://github.com/unclebob/ub-mode and download the SKILL.md file
- 2Copy SKILL.md into your agent's skills folder, e.g. ~/.claude/skills/ub-mode/SKILL.md
- 3Run /ub-mode in your agent to turn the mode on
- 4Send the agent the text in the block below
- 5Check the Crapper or Dryer report the agent shows for your code
- 6Give the agent a task and confirm the code still works after changes
Text for your agent
Copy this and send it to your agent — Claude Code, Codex, any of them:
Connect ub-mode from https://github.com/unclebob/ub-mode — copy SKILL.md into the Claude Code skills folder and work by this discipline from now on; show me what Crapper or Dryer report on my current code.
