Artificial Intelligence (AI) agents consume 600 times more energy than chat requests.
A climate scientist spent 8 weeks using Claude Code. He estimates that making one agentic request uses as much energy as 600 non-agentic chatbot requests.
Agents are about 600x more energy intensive than regular chatbots. Zeke Hausfather, a climate scientist, used Claude Code for 8 weeks. He made 1,138 requests, which consumed 3.2 billion tokens. On average, he used 3 kWh per day. That’s 370 kg of CO₂ over the course of a year, or halfway between San Francisco and New York by airplane.
With agents now being used by millions of people, we need to think about the real world impacts of AI. Even though most tokens are cached (96%), this doesn’t solve the problem. Moving from chat to agency is a qualitatively different level of demand on our electrical system and planet.
