AI Agents Consume 600× More Energy Than a Chat Request
Climate scientist Zeke Hausfather logged eight weeks of Claude Code sessions and found that a single agentic request consumes as much energy as 600 ordinary chat queries.
An AI agent consumes roughly 600 times more electricity than a standard chatbot query. Climate scientist Zeke Hausfather logged eight weeks of Claude Code sessions: 1,138 requests, 3.2 billion tokens, averaging 3 kWh per day. A full year of that workflow amounts to 370 kg of CO₂ — equivalent to half a San Francisco–to–New York flight.
Now that agents have become a working tool for millions of people, AI's energy footprint is no longer abstract. Providers cache 96% of tokens, but that's not enough: the shift from chat to agentic work represents a fundamentally different order of load on the grid and the climate.
