Alibaba bans use of its AI assistant “Claude” from July 10th
Alibaba will block Claude Code across the company from July 10th and label it ‘high risk’ software after finding it might be spying on Chinese users. Workers will be switched to its own Qoder coding platform instead.
From July 10th, employees at Alibaba will no longer be able to use Anthropic’s Claude Code AI code assistant and will have to switch to the company’s own Qoder coding tool. Anthropic said it was trying to stop unauthorized resellers, but Alibaba found it was potentially spying on Chinese users.
It’s the latest sign of growing tensions between Anthropic and China. The company recently blocked Chinese groups from using its AI models and now Alibaba is responding by blocking itself first. Political considerations are making AI dev tools a new battleground in the tech cold war, and choosing which code assistant to use in your business is now a geopolitical move.
