Amazon Bets $1B on Embedding AI Agents Inside Client Offices

Amazon is investing $1 billion in an internal Forward Deployment Engineers (FDE) unit — engineers from this team will work on-site at client companies and deploy AI agents built on AWS. The announcement was made by Francesca Vasquez, AWS VP of Frontier AI. The goal isn't just to hand off a working system, but to leave clients with the skills, workflows, and patterns they need to keep moving forward on their own.

OpenAI has already launched a similar unit backed by $4 billion in partnership with private investors; Anthropic's came in at $1.5 billion. All three are copying Palantir's playbook — the company that made FDE its primary competitive differentiator: an on-site presence inside a client organization lets you retain contracts, expand them, and actually shape how AI gets embedded into real-world processes.

The enterprise AI deployment market has turned into a race for physical presence. The biggest tech players are competing for the right to sit inside their clients' businesses — because that's where, not in the cloud, the question of whether an agent survives contact with real processes actually gets decided.
