AMD Buys Fei-Fei Li's World Labs for $8.2 Billion

AMD has announced it is buying World Labs for $8.2 billion. Fei-Fei Li founded World Labs in 2024. She is a Stanford professor and one of the people who shaped modern computer vision. The company's first product, Marble, builds "world" models. These models understand physical space and train robots on it, rather than working with text alone. The deal is expected to close before the end of 2026, pending regulatory approval. Li explained the decision this way: "To do this, you need to scale effort, extend reach, and get closer to the hardware."

To me this reads more as a shift in the balance of power among chipmakers than as a tool I would use myself. This is the second time in a row that AMD has bought a research team rather than just a chip business. The company is clearly building a link between hardware and models that understand the physical world, not just text. The World Labs team builds Marble for robots and simulations. That is far from my day-to-day work with coding agents. But the chip rivalry between AMD and Nvidia ends up affecting everyone who pays for inference.
