Anthropic Changes Its Data Storage Policy Following Customer Complaints
From Fall 2026, Anthropic will allow enterprises to host their data locally within their cloud providers instead of having it stored on Anthropic’s servers. This comes after a backlash from various sectors (particularly banking, healthcare & public services) following the introduction of a 30 day retention period for conversational data (used to protect against cyber attacks).
In response to feedback from its enterprise clients, Anthropic has updated its data retention policy. From Fall 2026, the 30 day retention period for conversation data (to protect against cyber attacks) will be moved from Anthropic’s servers into client’s cloud environments. This follows a significant backlash to the original policy which was announced in June 2026, particularly from those in banking, healthcare and public services. The new solution has been designed in partnership with over 100 enterprise clients over the last few months.
Data Storage On Vendor Platforms Is A Major Issue For Regulated Sectors Looking To Use AI. Anthropic admitted that the previous policy posed a “business risk” and acted quickly to change course before its competitors (OpenAI is currently only piloting this solution with Databricks & Microsoft). There is growing competition between vendors for enterprise business around data sovereignty.
