Anthropic Gives 5% of Its Shares to a Fund for People Losing Jobs to AI
Anthropic handed 5% of its shares to a new fund meant to help people losing their jobs to AI, and Elon Musk responded by promising to give SpaceX shares to 72 million American children.
Anthropic, the company behind the Claude AI assistant, launched its Public Benefit Fund on October 18. The fund is a separate for-profit entity, fully owned by Anthropic, not a charity. Anthropic handed it 5% of the company's shares right away. The fund can also receive up to 2% more shares for every 50% increase in Anthropic's valuation. Anthropic says this setup gives it more flexibility. It can make large donations to regular nonprofits, or pay specific groups of people directly. One example Anthropic gave is support for workers affected by AI-driven changes in the labor market, on top of the $200 million program the company already runs to study the issue. But that is just one possible use of the fund, not a fixed plan.
This builds on earlier pledges. Anthropic's co-founders have already promised to donate 80% of their personal shares. About half of Anthropic's employees take part in a program where the company matches the shares employees choose to give away. Counting the new fund, roughly 20% of Anthropic's shares are now set aside for charitable purposes. That share could grow further as the company's valuation rises. Separately, Elon Musk, who runs Tesla and SpaceX, wrote on X that company shares should go directly to people instead of through funds. The next day, he said SpaceX would give its shares to about 72 million American children, $146 each, roughly $10.5 billion in total, calling it just a first step.
Anthropic's structure ties the size of its donations to the company's own growth, rather than to one fixed, one-time pledge. So the amount set aside for public benefit grows automatically as the company's value rises. Attention to AI's effect on jobs keeps growing. Against that backdrop, a scalable equity commitment like this gives other AI companies a concrete benchmark to measure themselves against, instead of vague promises.
