Anthropic is negotiating with Samsung over producing their own AI processor. They’ve brought on a former Tesla & OpenAI chip engineer, and are building a new hardware division.

According to The Decoder, Anthropic is negotiating with Samsung Electronics to produce their own AI chip. At this point, they don’t have a specific design, but they’re figuring out what features they want and how much compute power they need.

They’ve also brought on a seasoned chip engineer, Clive Chan, who previously worked on teams at Tesla and OpenAI. While they won’t officially confirm anything, they say “AWS, Google, and Nvidia chips remain central to our strategy.”

This is part of a larger trend. In June, OpenAI announced their Jalapeño chip (in collaboration with Broadcom). Large AI research groups are trying to break away from Nvidia and lower their infrastructure costs by building their own chips, so they can maintain profit margins when they start doing more inference.
