ByteDance & Hollywood agree on AI Copyright Contract!

Bytedance (Tiktok’s owner) has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Motion Picture Association (MPA). The companies agreed to “a shared copyright infringement protection framework” for Bytedance’s AI models used across its apps including TikTok, video editing app CapCut and video generator Dreamina. MPA is an organization that represents major Hollywood film studios (Disney, Paramount, Warner Bros. Discovery).

The dispute started back in February 2026 when the MPA issued a written warning to Bytedance to cease and desist from infringing on their copyrighted material. The company had to suspend the worldwide rollout of its video generator Seedance 2.0 and start improving its content filtering algorithms. New versions of the app (Seedream 5.0 Pro and Seedance 2.5) already come with stronger filters which the MPA’s Chairman Charles Rivkin confirmed.

This is the first big agreement between AI developers and Hollywood which did not go to court. Other generative AIs (Midjourney, Stability AI) are still in court with the same Hollywood studios. The settlement between Bytedance and MPA raises the bar on expectations for other AI developers.

The news is a clear message to the AI industry that rightsholders want action now, and they are willing to go straight to the source to get it. Generative AI developers will come under increasing pressure to implement filtering algorithms before they release their products onto the market, rather than in response to legal action. The agreement between Bytedance and MPA may serve as a blueprint for similar agreements with other AI developers.
