OpenAI just unveiled a ChatGPT extension for Apple Messages that can read, write, edit and send your messages automatically. It understands context and suggests responses based on previous interactions. If you give the extension permission to run in the background, it will send messages even if you don’t approve them. The company claims everything is handled locally on the device and it doesn’t store an index of your messages. However, there aren’t any technical details available. This feature is available via Codex and ChatGPT Work.
This is the first time we see an A.I. assistant interact directly with our personal messaging apps. So, you can imagine how this will redefine communication. You’re basically having a conversation with a digital representation of yourself. And the next logical step would be to integrate this with your work chat, emails and phone calls. But until now, we haven’t been able to answer this question: “When I’m messaging with you, am I really talking with you or your A.I. bot?”
