ChatGPT by OpenAI for Linux. Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora. Access to ChatGPT Work and Codex. About a month after the release of the native Anthropic Claude Linux client, OpenAI has rolled out a preview of the ChatGPT app for Linux.
OpenAI has unveiled a preview of the official ChatGPT app for Linux. It’s the first native client for this operating system that powers most of the world’s servers and is the main development environment for software engineers.
Supported Distributions
The ChatGPT app is designed for Ubuntu 24.04 and 26.04 LTS, Debian 13, Fedora 43 and 44. OpenAI says that these versions support “many Linux distributions” (not only these).
What's Inside
The ChatGPT app gives users access to three products: regular ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work (for work and business tasks), and Codex (a code editor, annotator and corrector). Linux was among the most popular requests after the release of the first mobile ChatGPT apps.
Context: Anthropic's Move
A month ago, Anthropic rolled out its native Claude app for Linux, and OpenAI countered right away. There’s a competition going on between top AI labs for developers and tech-savvy users who prefer Linux as their main OS.
