Anthropic: In-House AI Use Now Costs More Than Payroll
Anthropic's IPO filing shows the internal cost of running Claude has overtaken employee payroll, growing more than 250x between January and September.
Anthropic's IPO filings contain one telling number. In April, the cost of using Claude inside the company, calculated at the same rates charged to outside customers, passed the monthly payroll for employees, not counting stock. By September, this internal AI use had grown more than 250 times since January.
Anthropic is not actually paying Claude more real money than it pays its own staff. The figure is based on customer pricing, not actual internal cost. The same filings say Claude wrote more than 90% of the new code added to Anthropic's own software in September. Still, the fact that the company lists numbers like these in official IPO documents right next to the payroll figure is itself news. Internal AI use is now tracked as a cost line comparable to salaries.
