Non-profit Current AI just secured $400M from France, the Ford Foundation, DeepMind and Salesforce to create open source AI infrastructure that’s free and competitive with OpenAI and Google. They’re already up and running with their first two offerings: Suno Sutra (an offline device for 22 Indian languages) and Alpha Chat (an open source chatbot developed by 10 teams in 7 weeks). They’ve also given out $3.2M in grants to projects in Kenya, Lebanon and Brazil.
Right now, AI infrastructure is dominated by a few US corporations, leaving hundreds of languages and cultures out of their business plans. This project takes inspiration from the early days of the Internet. It wasn’t any particular product that revolutionized things — it was the open public protocol.
