Open-source tool deletes Apple Intelligence from a Mac

A developer released a free command line tool called RemoveMacAI. It turns off Apple Intelligence on a Mac, deletes the models, and frees about 12 gigabytes of disk space.

A developer has created a free, open source command line utility named RemoveMacAI. This allows you to turn off Apple Intelligence (AI) features added to recent versions of Mac OS software and remove all associated AI models with a single command. It disables Siri (Apple’s voice assistant), Writing Tools, Genmoji, Image Playground, the native ChatGPT plugin and auto summarize functionality. It also removes the AI models and prevents macOS from reinstalling them. According to the developer, this should save around 12GB of space but some commenters have mentioned saving much more than that. There is also a “revert” command to put things back the way they were should you decide you want these features after all. Apple has taken away the ability to easily turn off all of these features at once with a single checkbox. Now each option is spread out over a dozen different system preferences panels and the AI models are still installed even when everything is turned off.

This utility is effective since it is open source and you can inspect the code yourself to see exactly what it does before using it. It's harder to be sure what will happen when interacting with Apple’s system preferences panels. This addresses a specific issue where people want to free up space on their laptops by removing unwanted features. Nothing is said here about the quality of the AI models themselves which is irrelevant to our goal of saving space on a laptop.
