DoorDash Launches AI Agent That Takes Food Orders by Text

DoorDash has opened a waitlist in the US for an AI agent you can simply text in Apple Messages to order food, with no need to open the app. The agent understands ordinary phrases like "the usual" and remembers past orders, including your Friday night habits. For a group with different dietary restrictions and different portion counts, it can put together the whole group order itself. The launch takes aim at Uber Eats and Grubhub. At the same time, DoorDash is testing drone delivery with several restaurants in Northern California.
For a texting agent whose only job is ordering food, this is exactly the kind of task current models handle well. The range of possible actions is narrow. The cost of a mistake is low. And a human still checks the one thing that matters: whether the food actually arrives, which is easy to verify. I do not expect agents like this to start handling messier everyday tasks anytime soon. Those tasks require holding context across more than one order, and you cannot just ask "the usual" to cover for that. For now, DoorDash and its rivals are competing in this one narrow niche. That looks like an honest use of agents, not a promise to replace something bigger.
